Puff Count Ratings: How the Number Is Reached and Why Yours Differs

Every disposable carries a number on the front — 3500, 10000, 15000 — and most people read it as a quantity, like litres in a tank. It isn't. It's a rating produced by a test, in a mode, against a cut-off someone chose. This guide is about that number: where it comes from, and why your count lands elsewhere. How the number is produced

Puff ratings come from machine puffing. A rig draws air through the device on a fixed cycle — set puff volume, set duration, set gap — and counts until output falls below whatever the tester calls the end. The result is a count of machine puffs, not a measurement of anything inside the device. Change the puff length, the interval or the cut-off and the same device honestly yields a different number.

A documented regime does exist: ISO 20768:2018, out of CORESTA Recommended Method 81, specifies a 55 mL puff over 3 seconds every 30 seconds on a square-wave profile. But its stated scope is emissions characterisation — analysing what comes out of a device, not rating how long one lasts — and both bodies caution it isn't meant to represent real-world use.

So which protocol do vape brands use for the headline figure? We can't tell you, because they don't say. We re-read IGET's official pages for the Bar, Bar Pro and ONE while writing this: they publish puffs, dimensions, weight, materials and coil type, and nothing about puff duration, interval, or where counting stopped. For the other brands we stock there's no manufacturer spec page at all. The test is unpublished, so no puff figure on any box is reproducible or comparable between makers.

The clearest proof: one device, two ratings

IGET's own page for the ONE settles the argument. The device has a dual-mode screen, and the page prints both figures side by side: Regular Mode 12000 puffs, Turbo Mode 9000 puffs. Same hardware, same liquid, same coil — two headline numbers three thousand apart, separated only by how hard you run it. The maker states the trade plainly: regular gives medium cloud and a milder hit, turbo a big cloud and a strong one.

Notice too what those pages leave out: IGET publishes no e-liquid volume and no nicotine strength for the Bar, Bar Pro or ONE. The number you're handed is chosen by the maker, and so is the number you're not — a point we take further in our guide to reading a vape listing.

Your puff is not the lab's puff

A puff count is denominated in the tester's puff; you spend it in yours. A one-second nip and a four-second pull are both "one puff" to you, but they aren't the same event — the longer draw fires the coil for longer and vaporises more liquid, so a habitual long draw burns through several lab puffs at a time. Two people can empty an identically rated device having counted wildly different totals, and both counted correctly. Draw style is the same mechanism at a bigger scale: a tight mouth-to-lung nip sits close to a machine puff, a long direct-to-lung pull does not. Our MTL vs DTL guide explains which you do.

Battery-limited or liquid-limited

A rated count assumes the battery survives to the last drop, and whether that holds depends on the device. IGET Bar and IGET Bar Pro have no charging port — sealed for life, so whichever runs out first ends it. Rechargeable devices such as IGET ONE, GROO MAX and G.T. are effectively liquid-limited. Using the number well

As a relative ranking inside one brand it works. A Bar Pro rated 10000 genuinely does outlast a Bar rated 3500 — both are 1.2Ω mesh, tested by the same people to the same unpublished method, so the ordering is real even if the absolutes aren't verifiable. What it can't do is cross brands. Two makers with different protocols produce numbers that were never on the same scale, so a 15000 from one and a 12000 from another tell you nothing about which lasts longer. It also makes a poor per-dollar calculator: dividing price by a figure you can't audit launders an unverified number into a confident-looking one. Technique moves your total more than the rating does, and that's covered separately.
